Skimming & Scanning: The Speed Formula for IELTS Reading

You start Reading confidently… but by passage 3, time is almost over.
This happens to most students—not because the test is too hard, but because they read everything.
Why you keep running out of time
Here’s what usually goes wrong:
- You try to read every word carefully
- You don’t know where to look for answers
- You lose time understanding difficult vocabulary
- You read again and again to “be sure”
IELTS is not a reading test—it’s a time + strategy test
The smart way to read faster
You don’t need to read everything. You need to read smart.
How to use skimming & scanning effectively
1. Skim first (Get the big idea)
Read quickly to understand the topic and structure
Focus on:
- Title
- First & last sentences of paragraphs
2. Scan for answers (Find specific info)
Look for keywords from the question
Example:
Question: “When was the company founded?”
→ Scan for numbers/dates only
3. Ignore difficult words
Don’t stop for every unknown word
If it’s important, the sentence will still make sense
4. Use keywords + synonyms
The passage won’t use the same words
“Kids” → “children”
“Buy” → “purchase”
5. Move on quickly
If you can’t find it in 30–40 seconds, skip and return later
Try this quick practice
Passage topic: Climate change effects
Question:
“What is the main cause of rising sea levels?”
Step:
- Don’t read everything
- Scan for “sea levels” or similar words
- Find the exact line → answer quickly
What to remember
- Don’t read every word
- Skim for idea, scan for answers
- Focus on keywords
- Ignore unnecessary details
- Time management is everything
Final Tip
Practice reading with a timer daily. Once you master skimming and scanning, you’ll finish all 3 passages with confidence.
